Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1: Yungang Grottoes · Datong Ancient City · Dai Wang Mansion by Night

Morning – Yungang Grottoes

Begin your Datong adventure with a visit to the spectacular Yungang Grottoes, around 40 minutes from downtown Datong.

Allow at least 3–4 hours to explore the site properly.

Carved into the sandstone cliffs during the Northern Wei Dynasty, the grottoes represent one of the greatest achievements of ancient Chinese Buddhist sculpture. The complex contains dozens of major caves and more than 50,000 Buddhist statues and niches.

As you walk through the caves, look closely at the extraordinary details — monumental Buddhas, delicate carvings, musicians, dancers, celestial beings, and traces of ancient cultural exchanges along the Silk Road.

This is not simply a sightseeing stop. It is a journey into the artistic world of China more than 1,500 years ago.

Afternoon – Datong Ancient City

Return to Datong and explore the historic old city.

  • Huayan Temple – Visit Huayan Temple, one of the finest surviving examples of Liao-Jin Buddhist architecture. The temple complex is known for its impressive wooden halls, Buddhist sculptures, and historical atmosphere. One of its most memorable treasures is the graceful Liao-era Bodhisattva statue, sometimes nicknamed the “Oriental Venus.”
  • Nine-Dragon Wall – Continue to the famous Nine-Dragon Wall, a spectacular glazed-tile screen decorated with nine colorful dragons. Unlike many Western architectural traditions, Chinese imperial architecture often used dragons as symbols of power, protection, and imperial authority — making this colorful wall much more than a decorative landmark.

Day 2: Hanging Temple · Jingtu Temple · Yingxian Wooden Pagoda

Morning – Hanging Temple & Jingtu Temple

Start early and travel toward Hanging Temple, one of the most extraordinary architectural wonders in Shanxi.

Built more than 1,500 years ago, the temple appears to cling impossibly to the side of a steep cliff, with wooden halls and walkways suspended high above the valley.

What makes it even more fascinating is its religious diversity.

Inside the same complex, you can find elements of Buddhism, Taoism, and Confucianism — an unusual reflection of traditional Chinese religious culture.

The temple’s narrow corridors, wooden balconies, steep stairs, and dramatic mountain setting make this one of the most memorable stops on the journey.

For fans of Black Myth: Wukong: Shanxi’s ancient temples and dramatic landscapes have attracted renewed international attention thanks to the game, making the Hanging Temple an especially exciting real-world destination for gamers and fantasy lovers.

Continue to Jingtu Temple, a quieter and more atmospheric stop away from the crowds.

Compared with the monumental Hanging Temple, Jingtu Temple offers a slower experience and a chance to appreciate Shanxi’s traditional Buddhist architecture and religious heritage.

Take your time to observe the details, architecture, and peaceful surroundings before continuing to Yingxian.

Afternoon – Yingxian Wooden Pagoda

The final highlight of your Datong journey is the magnificent Yingxian Wooden Pagoda, also known as the Fogong Temple Sakyamuni Pagoda.

Built in 1056 during the Liao Dynasty, this remarkable wooden structure has survived for nearly a thousand years.

At around 67 meters tall, it is considered one of the world’s oldest and tallest surviving wooden pagodas. Remarkably, the structure was built using traditional timber joinery rather than modern nails.

Because of its slight lean and extraordinary age, the pagoda is sometimes described to international travelers as the “Leaning Tower of the East” — a fascinating comparison with Italy’s famous Leaning Tower of Pisa.

But unlike Pisa, this is not simply a story about a tower that leans.

It is a masterpiece of ancient Chinese engineering, with sophisticated wooden bracket systems and a construction technique that has allowed it to survive earthquakes, wars, and centuries of weather.
